Jaquet-Droz automata

The animated dolls, The Draughtsman, The Musician and The Writer, were constructed by Swiss-born watchmaker Pierre Jaquet-Droz (1721–1790), his son Henri-Louis (1752-1791), and Jean-Frédéric Leschot (1746-1824) between 1768 and 1774.[1][2]

The Draughtsman (made of 2000 pieces) is a young child who can actually draw four different images. The Musician (made of 2500 pieces) is a female harmonium player. The Writer (made of 6000 pieces) is able to write any custom text up to 40 letters long.[2]

The still working and functional dolls are housed at the Museum of Art and History in Neuchâtel (Switzerland), now known as the Jaquet-Droz automata.[1]
